NXNE Fest 2012: The Highlights

Odonis Odonis @ NXNE 2012
Another North by Northeast has come and gone, and along with hundreds of amazing bands and fans turning the city into a crazy party town for one week. But it wasn’t only NXNE, Toronto also held Luminato on the same weekend, which held many great free performances, as well as some other festivals. It was a crazy week to live downtown and even though I wanted to stay away from Yonge and Dundas Square to avoid all the tourist folk and the crazy crowds it was hard to resist with all the amazing free shows.
My NXNE adventures started out on Thursday night a little lackluster, I pretty much managed to miss all the bands I wanted to see, so honourable mentions go out to Gold & Youth and Brasstronaut – Sorry I missed you guys! I did manage to catch Eight and a Half at Y&D Square (video below).
Friday, I ran around the college street area with Odonis Odonis on my radar, playing at Sneaky Dee’s followed shortly thereafter by TOPS. Both were excellent performances and in completely different ways: Odonis Odonis offers a garage rock, raw sound, while the crowd moshes HARD to their jams. TOPS is soft and synthy with that classic 80s feel, wooing the crowd with their sexbomb lead singer and keyboardist. You can view my crap video of Odonis Odonis on YouTube for kicks.
Saturday, I flew around the universe and existed in an ethereal reality… just jk, I just followed my friends around to some shows they wanted to see.
Sunday, luckily found out about Luminato’s great free shows. I went and caught Ohbijou play their set. Unfortunately, the stage was set up for the TSO so it was a bit cramped, but I am so glad I got to hear Casey’s powerful and controlled voice along with her sister Jenny backing her up on vocals and violin. The video below is a song dedicated to their Mother and Father who sacrificed leaving family behind in their native country to move to Canada and start a life here for their children.
…And on a completely unrelated note: I ended my NXNE by seeing the Spice Girls Tribute band perform at the Harbourfront Centre. If you like the Spice Girls… You’ll love this, five girl power inspired divas taking the stage with a local high school glee club to back them up and provide dance-filled morale to the growing crowd.
