Patrick Watson Performs Free Show For Luminato

Patrick Watson

In the month of June it is hard to not be at a concert somewhere in the city. Toronto in the summertime is home to many festivals that overlap leaving the city bustling until dreaded old-man winter arrives in a couple of months… But let’s not talk about that.

This year, like last, Luminato overlapped with NXNE and resulted in many free concerts to go to on the side of NXNE. Luminato is a week long arts festival that takes over the city every June. They have a million art-related exhibits as well as free shows by amazing artists at David Pecaut Square (The Hub), near Roy Thomson Hall and the CBC building on King Street. Last year I got to see the likes of Dan Mangan and Kathleen Edwards.

This year, Patrick Watson graced the stage (as well as other artists like Sarah Harmer and Serena Ryder) to give Toronto a breathtaking free show. This was the first time I saw the free shows at Luminato really fill up with excited people.

Patrick and his crew came on the stage and performed with grace, the fact that so many musicians can pack a stage and stay in sync with one-another always surprises me. As does Watson’s beautiful high-er-pitched voice. They decided to have some fun with the audience by doing some mash-ups with their own songs and covers of others. It was a truly creative and interesting spectacle.
